While agree Shadow Complex was a well received game, I dont know if you can say it reignited the genre. Just mentioning this so I don't get any, fuck that guy replies. I do know of all the dumb shit that has come out about what all he has said and believes.

Back then, I only knew of him as the author of the Ender Series and didn't know a thing about him. NOTE: Orson Scott Card writing for a game now definitely won't have the same impact. I thought it was level based like Ninja Gaiden, having never playing any of the originals. I got the same feeling when I bought and downloaded Strider 2014. I didn't own a DS or anything like that, and besides the XBLA release of Symphony of the Night, most of the newest ones that I had were on my Gameboy Advanced. It had been my favorite genre since I was a little kid. It wasn't until like 15 min later that it finally dawned on me that I was playing a metroidvania. After beating the first tank boss and still no mission complete or level clear screen, I was like sweet, the levels are long, that must have been a mid level boss or some shit. Seriously, for the first 30 minutes or so I kept expecting a mission or level complete screen to show up. I was nervous I wasted my money on a game with only 5 levels that would take me but a few hours to beat.

I was hoping the levels would at least get longer and that they didn't spend all their money on fancy graphics and Orson Scott Card. So I was hoping for at least a cheap short multi-level based action platformer like Contra.Īfter I played the prologue/intro, I was a bit disappointed that it was so short, and I thought was that the game was going to be some sort of offspring between Wild Guns and Contra. XBLA games were really hit or miss in its early days. The Xbox's game description didn't really explain the gameplay, and there wasn't any trailer videos to download. I was a big Ender Series fan so I wanted to check it out, and it was cheap for a broke college student. I only downloaded the game because I had read that Orson Scott Card helped write for it. A lot of the people who were at the right age to take advantage of this indie boom were people who had played Castlevania and Metroid growing up, and it was a quick path to making a 2D style open world action adventure game, which have long been popular. It was the success of people like Team Meat with Super Meat Boy that ushered in the indie craze because those guys had a long history of indie dev (on sites like Newgrounds) and were suddenly seeing a much more accessible and financially viable platform. I know the timing makes it feel important but really most of what happened is that XBLA was causing a general indie boom. They wanted to be Cave Story or Symphony of the Night or Super Metroid, and later they wanted to be Super Meat Boy, Canabalt, and Fez. None of my indie friends wanted to be Shadow Complex. But I distinctly remember having to explain to several of my developer friends what Shadow Complex even was. As an indie dev who started in the mid aughts, Shadow Complex was pretty interesting to me personally and sparked a lot of creative ideas (especially the foam gun).
